Finding and coming up with combined themes for our two July birthdays has become a regular part of our summer plans!

My son and daughter and 2 years apart, to the week, so we’ve opted for combined birthday parties rather than individual parties a week apart! I know that one day they’ll want their own parties but we’re going to ride out the combined parties as long as possible.

So there you have a very vague intro to one of the hardest and most beautiful and slightly disappointing days of my life.

It feels wrong to label it as disappointing, but I’m working on being honest with my emotions even when those emotions might be negative. That’s no easy feat for this enneagram 7, who has a tendency to always spin things to be positive. But, I would be doing a real disservice to the many other women out there who’s birth didn’t go perfectly. So I’ll call my birth what it was: Beautiful. Healing. Hard. Disappointing.

“Try that again- with honor and respect this time, mama”

The reprimand coming out of my 2 year olds mouth stung, a bit. He was right of course. I did need to “try again with honor and respect” as I addressed my 4 year old daughter, who was too busy playing with her Elsa doll to buckle her carseat belt in the back of our Subaru. 

After my first birth ended in an emergency c-section, I spent a lot of time on the internet researching my options for my next birth. I have vivid memories of spending many middle of the night feedings with my newborn daughter combing through articles on VBAC’s. I didn’t have a great c-section experience and wanted to know what other options I would have going forward.

They say “Babies don’t keep” and it’s true. And that’s worth mourning and also celebrating. I want to freeze time and I also can’t wait to watch him grow and see who he becomes one day. ⁣

⁣What an honor and also a beautiful burden it is, this season of living in the “both, and”.

There are few things I can think of that are as vulnerable as being a postpartum mom. It’s messy and glorious and exhausting and painful and miraculous. ⁣⁣But I’ve been feeling this sense of solidarity that I’m experiencing the same pains and aches and hormones and reality that every woman who has ever given birth has experienced. ⁣⁣

And it is messy and raw but it feels beautiful, too. Too beautiful to rush past. ⁣⁣

When we had Eliot one of the things that Jackson and I both felt strongly about was that having kids didn’t have to prevent us from traveling. We did learn quickly that it does, however, change how we travel. After a lot of trial and error we figured out which products made a huge difference in how well our kids sleep. Traveling with kids is all about balancing being prepared with being willing to let go of things you can’t control.

I’m realizing more and more that I’ll never be a perfect mom, but I can certainly be a repentant one. It’s not a perfect mom I need her to see, it’s one that is capable of saying “I’m sorry” 100 times if that’s what it takes.

After many trips with our two toddlers, we’ve made more mistakes than we can count when it comes to traveling with our kids! We’ve made trips harder and more stressful than necessary and we’re here to help you avoid the biggest travel mistakes that we’ve made!

Before you read on, hear me say this: I am not a pro mom at activities.

I wish I was the mom who prepped activities the night before, but I’m just not. I’m not organized enough for that and also, I just really don’t want to cut into my precious “chill” and work time in the evening to do it.
