Skiing With Kids at SKi Apache Ski Resort

We decided that now that our oldest kids are 5 and 3, it was time to take them on their first ski trip! As a mom, I know the importance of finding the perfect vacation spot that caters to the whole family. And I have to say, Ruidoso, New Mexico is a hidden gem for skiing with kids! A ski trip to Ruidoso was just what we were hoping for!

Nestled in the Sierra Blanca mountain range, Ruidoso offers some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the Southwest. The Ski Apache resort offers a variety of runs for skiers and snowboarders of all levels, as well as a terrain park for those looking to catch some air. And for the little ones, there's a ski school where they can learn the basics and have fun on the bunny slopes.

It’s worth noting that the Ski Apache ski school is only a 90 minute class, so we opted to just go for it and take the kids with us.

Not Glamourous but Great For a Family Ski Trip

Ski Apache isn’t the most glamorous of ski resorts, but that’s actually one of the best things about it. One of the best things about Ruidoso is that it's not as crowded as some of the more popular ski destinations, so you won't have to worry about long lift lines or crowded slopes. Plus, the town has a cozy, small-town feel that makes it the perfect place to relax and unwind after a day on the mountain. Skiing in Ruidoso, especially with kids in tow, feels less stressful than skiing in some of the bigger more glamorous resorts.

But skiing and snowboarding isn't the only thing Ruidoso has to offer. The quaint mountain town is also home to a variety of shops and restaurants, perfect for après-ski activities. And if you're looking for some indoor entertainment, there's a bowling alley and a movie theater.

Ruidoso also offers a variety of winter activities to enjoy besides skiing and snowboarding. Snowshoeing, snow tubing and cross-country skiing are popular options, as well as horse-drawn sleigh rides. If you're feeling adventurous, you can even try your hand at ice fishing or take a dog sled ride!

Dining Option in Ruidoso

When it comes to dining options, Ruidoso offers a wide variety of cuisines to choose from. From casual eateries to fine dining, there's something for every taste. We highly recommend trying some local favorites, like Casa Blanca and Alto Cafe! There are also several breweries and wineries in the area that offer tastings and tours. Check out more restaurant recommendations here.

Where to Stay in Ruidoso

Another great thing about Ruidoso is the variety of accommodations available. From cozy cabins to luxury resorts, there's something for every budget. We stayed at a cozy cabin in Alto, nestled among the trees with a beautiful front porch, which was the perfect way to end a day of skiing. Overall, Ruidoso is a fantastic destination for a family ski vacation!

Because of it’s close proximity to where we live in Lubbock, Ruidoso has become a sweet little destination for our family! We actually love visiting in the summer as well! While it doesn’t have the world best hiking or the biggest mountains, it’s actually a great destination when traveling with kids. There are tons of easy hiking trails, fun outdoor activities, lakes and more! Check out my post here for our Ruidoso Travel Guide!

Overall, I would highly recommend a ski trip in Ruidoso! The skiing and snowboarding are top-notch, and the small-town charm and variety of activities make it the perfect place to make memories with your family. So pack your bags and hit the slopes in Ruidoso, New Mexico!

Planning a family ski trip can be overwhelming, but Ruidoso makes it easy with its kid-friendly amenities. Ski Apache offers a children's ski rental package that includes skis, boots and poles, as well as a helmet. And if you're worried about your little ones getting cold, the resort also offers a ski clothing rental package that includes a jacket, pants, and gloves.
